The field trip to the beach had not been approved. The policy of the school district was not to approve field trips to any sites near the water. The district did not even approve boat trips for whale watching. On all trips that were approved, transportation had to be provided by school bus, not car or van. Everything was scrutinized very closely for safety.

When she was questioned, the club sponsor said that the trip had been the idea of her students. Her intention had been to provide a way for kids to have fun. The students had gone to the beach in their own cars. She had told the students to stay with her as a group and not to go into the water. But she was the only adult with almost 30 kids. It was a tragedy waiting to happen, and it did happen.

Don’t let this tragedy happen at your school. Be sure to evaluate all field trips very carefully for safety. Be sure there are enough adults. Make sure there is transportation by school bus, not by car. Be sure that the field trip location is safe. Make sure there is an emergency plan in the event of an injury or accident. Try to think of everything that could go wrong.

When parents allow their child to go on a field trip, they assume that the school will take all necessary safety precautions. Be sure that you have a clearly written policy on field trips explaining all requirements that teachers must follow. If the trip will not be safe, you must say no. If a teacher violates the policy, you must go forward with strong disciplinary action.
